Info Hub

The Guild works with all students at UCB to offer support and advice if you need it. We’re not a UCB department, we’re a separate charity, and so you can reach us to get free and independent advice to help you through some of the most common challenges listed below.

What we can help with

The Guild has staff trained to support you with all of the most common UCB processes, including the ones below.

Complaints

The complaints process is for raising a concern with a non-academic aspect of your UCB experience, for example:

  • Complaints about a service
  • Issues with University-managed accommodation
  • Financial decisions which you believe are unfair

We can help you raise your complaint correctly and discuss the relative strength of your case. We can also accompany you to relevant meetings if you wish.

Assessment Appeals

Assessment Appeals allow you to raise a concern about an academic aspect of your UCB experience, for example:

  • A forced withdrawal from your course
  • Challenging a mark that was processed incorrectly

We can help you make your appeal correctly and help you to identify whether you meet the valid grounds for an appeal.

Misconduct (including Academic Misconduct)

UCB operates two processes for misconduct: one for non-academic disciplinary allegations, and one for academic-related misconduct (such as collusion, plagiarism, or the use of AI).

We can help you to understand the process and its possible outcomes. If you would like, we can also attend investigatory meetings with you to offer support and make sure that you can express yourself as best you can (however, we will not argue your case on your behalf).

What we Can’t Help with

Across our site, you’ll find other help guides for some of the common things that might affect students, but we’re only able to offer detailed advice on the processes listed above. In particular, we’re not able to offer advice on the following:

  • Finances (other than complaints or withdrawals) – for this, we recommend that you speak to the Financial Support team in Baskerville House
  • Visas – this requires specialist training, so you must contact visa-advice@ucb.ac.uk
  • Legal disputes – for this, we recommend contacting Citizens Advice

If we are able to help you, it’s important to note that the Guild are here to ensure that all students are treated fairly. That means we’ll support you to express yourself fully and make sure that your process is fair, but we never argue on a student’s behalf. A Guild Advisor can explain this in more detail if you need us.

Book a Meeting

If you’re looking for help in an area where we offer support, please visit the relevant page for more information and feel welcome to schedule time with a Guild Advisor. If you’ve received relevant emails or a letter from UCB, please bring this to the meeting because it helps us understand your situation (and the process being followed) in greater detail.
